Shijo Varghese, a ray of hope for the disabled affected by spinal cord injuries through the Bahal Foundation
Shijo Varghese, originally a resident of Kulai in Mangaluru, was born on February 11, 1989, as the son of late K.V. Varghese and Mrs. Rachel Varghese. While studying in the 4th standard at Mangaluru Bharati English Medium School at a young age, harboring many dreams, what happened in his childhood was entirely different. While playing at a young age, a ball fell on the terrace of his house. When he went up to retrieve it, he lost his balance, fell down, and suffered a spinal cord injury. At the age of 9, carrying big hopes and aspirations, he faced massive challenges in his life. After falling from the terrace, he was admitted to Father Muller Hospital in Mangaluru for treatment. During his treatment at the hospital, they informed him about his spinal cord injury. They made him realize that he would no longer be able to walk and could only move around using a wheelchair. He stayed in the hospital and received treatment.
After receiving treatment, an Ayurvedic pundit came to his house for 2-3 months to provide treatment. He received Ayurvedic treatment in Nelamangala, Bengaluru for 1 year, and then received treatment in Kerala for 4 years. Remaining in a wheelchair, he recovered enough to do his own work. He then returned to Mangaluru and continued his education. The untimely death of his father while he was studying hurt him even more. He wrote his 10th standard exam through NIOS and also completed his PUC education. Later, in 2019, he came forward to do a 6-month VA course at Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled in Bengaluru. While learning this course, he got a job there as a Donation Coordinator. He worked for 1 year and stopped for various reasons. He then started working from home as an Accountant Executive in an income consultancy. Later, he worked as a volunteer in Thiruvalla, Kerala, and has been working in various organizations and doing several courses.
In 2024, he started doing a Leadership Development Program in Kerala. The main objective of this course was to work through an organization. So, Shijo completed this course until March 31 and has now started the Bahal Foundation. The main objective of the Bahal Foundation is to provide rehabilitation to disabled people who have suffered spinal cord injuries and to provide them with the necessary facilities. Currently, he is providing information about creating livelihoods for the disabled and is visiting various organizations to conduct training. It is our hope that this organization grows into a much larger institution and becomes a guiding light in the lives of the disabled.

ಶಿಜೋ ವರ್ಗೀಸ್ರವರು ಮೂಲತಃ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಕುಳಾಯಿ ನಿವಾಸಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದು, 11 ಫೆಬ್ರವರಿ 1989 ರಲ್ಲಿ ದಿ. ಕೆ.ವಿ.ವರ್ಗೀಸ್ ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ರೀಚಲ್ ವರ್ಗೀಸ್ ದಂಪತಿಯ ಪುತ್ರರಾಗಿ ಜನಿಸಿದರು. ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಭಾರತಿ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಮೀಡಿಯಂ ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ 4 ನೇ ತರಗತಿಯನ್ನು ಓದುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರದ್ದು ಸಣ್ಣ ವಯಸ್ಸು ಅನೇಕ ಕನಸನ್ನು ಹೊತ್ತುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಇವರ ಬಾಲ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದದ್ದೇ ಬೇರೆ. ಸಣ್ಣ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಆಟವಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಗ ಬಾಲ್ ಮನೆಯ ಮಹಡಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಿದ್ದ ಕಾರಣ ಅದನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಮೇಲಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಆಯ ತಪ್ಪಿ ಕೆಳಕ್ಕೆ ಬಿದ್ದಾಗ ಬೆನ್ನುಹುರಿ ಅಪಘಾತಕ್ಕೆ ಒಳಗಾದರು. 9 ನೇ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ದೊಡ್ಡ - ದೊಡ್ಡ ಆಸೆ, ಆಕಾಂಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊತ್ತುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಇವರ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ದೊಡ್ಡದಾದ ಸವಾಲುಗಳೇ ಎದುರಾಯಿತು. ಮಹಡಿಯಿಂದ ಬಿದ್ದಾಗ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಫಾದರ್ಮುಲ್ಲರ್ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಗೆ ದಾಖಲಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ಪಡೆದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಬೆನ್ನುಹುರಿ ಅಪಘಾತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವಿಷಯ ತಿಳಿಸಿದರು. ಇನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ನಡೆದಾಡಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ ಹಾಗೂ ಗಾಲಿಖುರ್ಚಿಯ ಮುಖಾಂತರ ಮಾತ್ರ ಚಲಿಸಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವೆಂದು ಮನವರಿಕೆ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಇದ್ದು ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡರು.
ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದ ನಂತರ 2-3 ತಿಂಗಳು ಆಯುರ್ವೇದಿಕ್ ಪಂಡಿತರೊಬ್ಬರು ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದು ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ನೆಲಮಂಗಲದಲ್ಲಿ 1 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ತನಕ ಆಯುರ್ವೇದಿಕ್ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡು ನಂತರ 4 ವರ್ಷ ಕೇರಳದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಗಾಲಿಖುರ್ಚಿಯಲ್ಲೇ ಇದ್ದು ತನ್ನ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ತಾನು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಷ್ಟು ಚೇತರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು. ನಂತರ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ತನ್ನ ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರಿಸಿದರು. ಓದುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ತಂದೆಯ ಅಕಾಲಿಕ ಮರಣ ಅವರನ್ನು ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಗಾಸಿಗೊಳಿಸಿತು. NIOS ಮುಖಾಂತರ 10ನೇ ತರಗತಿಯ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ಬರೆದು ಪಿಯುಸಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ಸಹ ಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಳಿಸಿದರು. ನಂತರ 2019 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮರ್ಥನ ಟ್ರಸ್ಟ್ ಫಾರ್ ಡಿಸೆಬಲ್ನಲ್ಲಿ 6 ತಿಂಗಳ ವಿಎ ಕೋರ್ಸ್ ಮಾಡಲು ಮುಂದಾದರು. ಈ ಕೋರ್ಸ್ ಕಲಿಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಡೊನೇಶನ್ ಕೋ-ಆರ್ಡಿನೇಟರ್ ಆಗಿ ಕೆಲಸ ದೊರಕಿತು. 1 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿ ಕಾರಣಾಂತರದಿಂದ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿದರು. ಇನ್ ಕಮ್ ಕನ್ಸಲ್ಟೆನ್ಸಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಕೌಂಟೆಂಟ್ ಎಕ್ಸಿಕ್ಯುಟಿವ್ ಆಗಿ 'ವರ್ಕ್ ಫ್ರಂ ಹೋಮ್' ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲು ಮುಂದಾದರು. ನಂತರ ಕೇರಳದ ತಿರುವಲ್ಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವಯಂಸೇವಕರಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿ, ಬೇರೆಬೇರೆ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ಮತ್ತು ಹಲವಾರು ಕೋರ್ಸ್ಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ಬಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
2024 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇರಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಲೀಡರ್ಶಿಪ್ ಡೆವಲಪ್ಮೆಂಟ್ ಪ್ರೋಗ್ರಾಮ್ ಅನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವುದೇ ಈ ಕೋರ್ಸ್ನ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಉದ್ದೇಶವಾಗಿದೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಮಾರ್ಚ್ 31 ರ ತನಕ ಶಿಜೋ ಅವರು ಈ ಕೋರ್ಸ್ನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿ ಇದೀಗ ಬಹಾಲ್ ಫೌಂಡೇಶನ್ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ಬಹಾಲ್ ಫೌಂಡೇಶನ್ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯು ಬೆನ್ನುಹುರಿ ಅಪಘಾತಕ್ಕೊಳಗಾದ ದಿವ್ಯಾಂಗರಿಗೆ ಪುನಶ್ಚೇತನವನ್ನು ಒದಗಿಸುವುದು, ಅವರಿಗೆ ಅಗತ್ಯ ಇರುವ ಸೌಕರ್ಯವನ್ನು ನೀಡುವುದು ಇದರ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಉದ್ದೇಶವಾಗಿದೆ. ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಇದೀಗ ದಿವ್ಯಾಂಗರಿಗೆ ಜೀವನೋಪಾಯವನ್ನು ಕಲ್ಪಿಸುವುದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾಹಿತಿಯನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತಾ ಮತ್ತು ಬೇರೆ - ಬೇರೆ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಭೇಟಿ ನೀಡಿ ಟ್ರೈನಿಂಗ್ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನು ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆಸಿ ದಿವ್ಯಾಂಗರ ಬಾಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳಕಾಗ ಬೇಕೆಂಬುದೇ ನಮ್ಮೆಲ್ಲರ ಆಶಯವಾಗಿದೆ.
